Spike lavender essential oil is one of the most important essential oils produced historically and to this day in Spain.
It belongs to the genus of Lavandulas and is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops of Lavandula Latifolia W. of the Lamiáceas family.
It is an abundant wild species throughout the Mediterranean basin, especially in Spain, although in the last 20-25 years numerous plantations have been made, which is where most of the oil currently comes from, being found in the provinces of Guadalajara, Cuenca , Albacete, Soria and especially Murcia.
It is a plant of up to 90 cm in height, which in its upper part develops clustered flower spikes of an intense blue color, which is where it contains the essential oil, so today with mechanized harvesting we try to harvest the least possible amount of them and leaves and in this way reduce the handling of useless volumes.
Lavandula Latifolia W. distillation occurs in August.
