SANTOLINA ESSENTIAL OIL

Description

Santolina essential oil comes from an herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family. It is extracted through steam distillation of the flowering tops of Santolina chamaecyparissus L.

The plant typically grows no taller than 3 feet, featuring numerous thin, upright stems. Its leaves are linear and gradually disappear as the plant reaches the top, leaving a bare stretch. The flower heads contain similar flowers, which can sometimes be very hairy or, alternatively, very green with minimal hair.

Santolina thrives in the rocky, calcareous hills of much of the country, growing at elevations up to 2,000 meters. It is less common in Asturias and Galicia.

The distillation of Santolina essential oil takes place between June and October, ensuring the optimal quality and fragrance of the oil.

Benefits

Santolina essential oil is considered appetizing, digestive, antiseptic, expectorant and healing. In fact, the first virtues that were attributed to the flowering tops of the abutment were those of the chamomile, being later when it was observed that it was also vulnerable, emmenagogue and even vermifuge.

It is perfectly indicated for slow digestion, intestinal gas, menstrual pain, bronchitis, asthma, anorexia, and gastrointestinal spasms. In external use, it is used, above all, in infusion for conjunctivitis, inflammation of the eyelids or blepharitis, stomatitis and vaginitis. As always when we have an essence, we must observe due precautions, especially in children, as they are the most susceptible to poisoning.

Several species of santolina grow in our Peninsula. As there is no documentation on the other species, it is possible to think that there could be some toxic, so the collection should be left in the hands of experts. If we want to take advantage of its virtues, it is best to go to an expert in the field so that they can advise us.
