SWEET ALMOND VEGETABLE OIL

Description

Sweet almond vegetable oil is obtained through first cold pressing of the fruit of Prunus amygdalus var. Dulcis, belonging to the Rosaceae family.

The almond tree is a deciduous tree that can reach up to 10 meters in height. Its stem is smooth, green and brown when young, becoming cracked, scaly, and grayish as it matures. The leaves are simple, lanceolate, long, narrow, and pointed, ranging from 7.5 to 12.5 cm in length, with a deep green color and serrated or festooned edges. The flowers are solitary or in groups of 2-4, pentamerous, with five sepals, five petals that vary in color from white to pink depending on the species, measuring about 3-5 cm in diameter. The fruits, about 3-6 cm in length, are drupes with a leathery exocarp and mesocarp, and a hard endocarp. They are oblong, elliptical, with dry flesh, tomentose, green in color, and dehiscent. The fruit takes 9 months to mature.

A fruit tree of warm climates, it is sensitive to cold. Most almond trees are grown in dry conditions, on loose, sandy soils. The seed has two enveloping layers, the testa and the tegmen.

It is usually propagated by grafting onto a bitter almond rootstock, as it is more resistant to drought and calcareous soils.
